European Union: Please make up your mind on organic, for the sake of the environment

Is the practice of organic farming supposed to be about eco-farming at its best or is it supposed to be all natural? It’s important to know because it cannot be both at the same time. Such is the confusion on this question today that everybody seems to have a different answer. Even the European Union (EU) has defined organic in radically different ways depending where you look, for example the Organic Legislation 2007 says this:

1) Organic production is an overall system of farm management and food production that combines best environmental practices […] and a production method in line with the preference of certain consumers for products produced using natural substances and processes.

Glyphosate: Monsanto statement on European Commission extension (EN/DE/FR/NL/ES/IT/RO)

In response to today’s action by the European Commission to only temporarily extend the authorisation of glyphosate for 18 months, Dr. Philip W. Miller, Monsanto’s vice president of global regulatory and governmental affairs, released the following statement:

Today’s decision by the European Commission to temporarily extend glyphosate’s authorisation by 18 months ensures that European farmers, municipalities, gardeners and other users will continue to have access to the herbicide glyphosate while a longer-term solution to the product’s reauthorisation is found.

When I was first offered a summer internship at Monsanto, I’ll be honest – I hesitated.

I knew almost nothing about agriculture, GMOs or biotechnology (although I now know that those last two barely apply to Monsanto Europe, which is focused on traditional seeds). I felt extremely under-qualified for a position at a multinational corporation, much less one so successful. My greatest strengths were long-form journalism, napping and drinking coffee. Could I survive at a billion-dollar company?

The answer is no. I did not survive at Monsanto. I thrived here. This company, this office, these people – they’re all amazing. I learned quickly, read everything I could get my hands on and felt comfortable almost immediately.

Monsanto response to activist video published by The Guardian

The Guardian has published Monsanto’s response to an activist video rife with misinformation that was presented as news. Our response follows a fruitless exchange with The Guardian’s Readers Editor, who refused to remove the video from the Guardian’s website despite its being a piece of blatant propaganda. It’s a shame that the Guardian couldn’t even introduce our response without mistakes, misidentifying the author of the Monsanto letter, Daniel Kruithoff, as “Managing editor of Monsanto Australia & New Zealand.” Actually, he’s the head of our business in those two countries. Monsanto is not yet a publishing organisation. But sadly facts and accuracy don’t always seem to be top priority for the Guardian these days.

Monsanto Romania 2The Danube Delta  Biosphere Reserve, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, is simply breathtaking. Covering an area in the south-eastern part of Romania with a surface of 5,500 square km and a population of only approximately 15,000 people, the Danube Delta is home to 300 species of birds and 45 types of freshwater fish, along with many other creatures great and small. Monsanto publishes 2014 Sustainability Report

Monsanto today released its latest Sustainability Report, a 168-page report prepared in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative guidelines.

Since announcing its first sustainability commitment framework in 2008, the company has advanced its three sustainability principles: (1) improving the lives of farmers, workers and communities, (2) producing enough food to make a balanced meal accessible to all, and (3) conserving Earth’s resources and preserving the natural environment.
